September 2023 CAC Meeting

In communities across the nation, the need for affordable and accessible housing has never been more critical. It’s not just about having a roof over one’s head, but ensuring that housing is available for all, regardless of income or circumstance.

Our September 2023 Community Advisory Council meeting discussed these very issues and their relevance in Homan Square. Following our March 2023 meeting, where we focused on commercial needs, desires, and opportunities in the neighborhood, September’s meeting focused on housing types in the neighborhood that could provide future pathways for new development. The following types of development were considered:

  1. Multifamily Rental Housing: Multifamily rental units offer affordable housing options for individuals and families. These projects can provide immediate relief by increasing the supply of affordable rentals.
  2. Single-Family Ownership: Single-family homeownership projects aim to help families build equity and stability. These often require long-term planning, as they involve land acquisition, infrastructure development, and financial assistance programs for prospective homeowners.
  3. Transitional Housing for Youth: Addressing the unique needs of youth transitioning into adulthood is vital. Transitional housing projects provide a safe and supportive environment for young people to learn life skills and work towards self-sufficiency.
  4. Permanent Supportive Housing: For individuals facing chronic homelessness or dealing with disabilities, permanent supportive housing provides a stable, long-term solution. These projects offer not only a place to live but also access to essential services such as healthcare and counseling.

The discussion emphasized the importance of tailoring housing initiatives to the specific needs of the community. Participants recognized that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work and that a combination of these housing types can provide a holistic solution.

As our community continues to grapple with housing challenges, these conversations serve as a beacon of hope! By working together, we can continue to grow as an inclusive and equitable community where everyone has a safe and stable place to call home. The path ahead may be challenging, but with thoughtful planning and collaboration, we can build a brighter future for all.
